The Legacy of Dragon Ball
If you are reading this review, then you have surely heard of Akira Toriyama's critically acclaimed series, Dragon Ball Z. Dragon Ball as a show and cultural icon has long been the flagship anime/ manga in Japan when promoting their culture overseas. Whether it's the original manga, the TV series, merchandise, arcade games, console games and any related spin-offs, the character of Son Goku has achieved near worldwide fame. This game will give players the opportunity to pit their favorite Dragon Ball characters against each other in thrilling 1-vs-1 contests.
Core Gameplay and Features
Dragon Ball Z Budokai X preserves the traditions of classic fighters with a standard 1-vs-1 set up, a 2D display and a simple user interface. Gameplay is thrilling, fast-paced and fiercely competitive. Before hopping into a fight, it is worth checking out the various modes the game offers. Battle Mode allows you to examine the stats of the 100+ characters on offer in the game, each with different values for Attack, Defense and Speed. This allows a player to cater characters to their own particular play style, with high stats in a single category having a massive impact on gameplay. Battles can be conducted with up to six players at a time. To give yourself a challenge you can even go up against three opponents on your own. If you want to battle against other players, you can use the Online arena. This is designed in a similar way as Battle Mode with character stats and an online lobby available.
When engaged in a fight, above your character you will find your energy bar and your power bar, fairly typical of Dragon Ball-inspired fighters. The more damage you take, the more your energy will decrease, but your power meter will increase. The higher it gets, the closer you will get to unleashing your character's special abilities and devastating your opponent
When engaged in a fight, above your character you will find your energy bar and your power bar, fairly typical of Dragon Ball-inspired fighters. The more damage you take, the more your energy will decrease, but your power meter will increase. The higher it gets, the closer you will get to unleashing your character's special abilities and devastating your opponent. These include the Power Guard, reducing the damage you take, Blast 2s and other deadly attacks. Controls in the game are fairly intuitive, using only a few simple keyboard commands to execute attacks. Unfortunately, the diversity of characters does not reflect a diversity in their moves. Characters all seem to have similar moves for charging their power meter, firing projectiles and physical attacks.
Relive Classic Dragon Ball Sagas
The game offers five different sagas (story arcs) to choose from: Saiyan, Freezer, Androids, Cell and Buu. Each Saga contains a set of battles for the player to participate in, each of which re-enacts some part of that saga's storyline. In this sense the game stays true to the narrative of Dragon Ball, while allowing you to immerse yourself in it and live the experience of these epic battles. The characters' looks also honor these sagas, with decent texturing and detail for all characters in the game.
In many respects, Dragon Ball Z Budokai X resembles other fighters in the Dragon Ball genre of games, nevertheless it offers enough interesting features to make it worth playing. The game offers a story mode in the form of five sagas which perfectly fit the story of the anime. This lets you experience key battles in the show for yourself. For battles, the game offers simple, intuitive controls, 100 characters to choose from, each with their own Attack, Defense and Speed stats. The diversity here was quite impressive, allowing you to cater your playstyle as you pleased. The graphics for characters were also well presented and unique. However, during battles a lot of that mattered little since movesets for characters turned out to be so similar. If you are a fan of the Dragon Ball anime then I would definitely give this one a try. Online mode even lets you try your skills against real opponents with up to six players.
