Akira Toriyama's Legacy Lives On
If you are reading this review, then you have surely heard of Akira Toriyama's critically acclaimed series, Dragon Ball Z. Dragon Ball as a show and cultural icon has long been the flagship anime/ manga in Japan when promoting their culture overseas. Whether it's the original manga, the TV series, merchandise, arcade games, console games and any related spin-offs, the character of Goku has achieved near worldwide fame. Dragon Ball Z Tenkaichi Tag 2 is a follow up to the highly successful tag-based fighting game.
Core Gameplay and Features
The game is presented as an ordinary 2D fighting game, but on a far more epic scale. Characters, graphics, physics and the overall feel of the game are all a fitting tribute to Akira Toriyama's legacy. Characters are well drawn, with some decent battle animations. They also multiple Dragon Ball sagas so your favorite is bound to be in there. In all, the game offers over 70 different characters, each with their own animations and moves. Animations and visual effects display the typically ostentatious style of combat seen in the Dragon Ball series, with plenty of punishing blows and projectiles.
The user interface for the game is fairly straight forward. From the main menu you can choose from of the game's various modes including Arcade, Versus, Co-Op, Survival and Training. The first three can also be done as a team. Fights in the game are usually 1-vs-1, however, and take place in a wide range of locations taken from the show. Controls are simple enough to learn with basic movesets for each character.
During battles, at the top of the screen each fighter will have an energy bar and a blue power bar. As you deal more damage to your opponent, this power bar will fill up and allow you to unleash devastating attacks on your opponent. The progress of the bar is indicated by three slots to the left of the bar. To be the optimal fighter in the game, you also utilize combos. The more successive hits you score on your opponent, the higher your combo value will become. Special abilities will also help rack up your hit count.

As an apparently fan made game, Tenkaichi Tag 2 has little resemblance to the same game for PSP. Nevertheless, it offers exciting 2D battle mechanics, dozens of characters, multiple sagas and strong fighting gameplay. Graphics are fairly simple, with some nice animations for characters and for attacks, although I expected a lot more from the game. Movesets are also not that varied. The variety of game modes on offer is more than enough to entice most fans of the series. Play as a single player or on a team for the ultimate cooperative experience. All in all, the game is a great fighting game. It's easy to learn, difficult to master, and if you're a Dragon Ball fan, it will have more than enough to entertain you. Well worth downloading.
