Evernote is a free organizational and productivity tool for Android, developed by Evernote Corporation. Remember everything that is important to you in your life, set reminders, share notes and more. The app is available to download as a free version, though a premium version is also available with some additional features (see below).
The slogan says it all. In our daily lives, we are constantly on the move, whether physically or mentally. We rarely stay locked into a single thought for too long. While a lot of it might be productive, creative thinking, it is easily derailed by the simplest of things. If we make a point of noting down these thoughts, images, or other experiences, we have a better chance of remembering them, but conventional methods are not only impractical but unreliable, given how easily we could lose that precious piece of paper a phone number or recipe was written down on. With Evernote, things work a little differently. It will allow you to record things in a much more practical and intuitive way and, in the long term, allow you to remember everything.
Your Life in Notes
Evernote is designed with everyone in mind, whether intended for personal or business use. The user interface is highly compact, with a sidebar on the left and content pertaining to your notes, reminders, etc. on the right. As with most productivity apps, the more you use it, the better it can work for you. Hence, if you come across something you would like to remember, big or small, make a note of it. These 'notes' are the unique selling point of the app. They can be customized, resized, and organized any way you want, available for easy access. Notes can be text, photos or videos, compatible with a wide range of formats. They can contain attachments or even handwritten or voiced messages, all of which will pop up when you go to write one. When you create a note, it will be placed in the 'All Notes' section of your sidebar. There is no limit to how many notes you can create. Whether you want to remember something or you've come up with a brilliant idea, making a note of it will benefit you in the long run.
Once you have gotten used to the process, you can make them even easier to find using tags. Akin to meta information on the internet, tags will let you find notes related to particular topics more efficiently. These tags will be chosen by you, meaning you're more likely to be able to find that important photo when the time comes, whether a month or a year later
Once you have gotten used to the process, you can make them even easier to find using tags. Akin to meta information on the internet, tags will let you find notes related to particular topics more efficiently. These tags will be chosen by you, meaning you're more likely to be able to find that important photo when the time comes, whether a month or a year later. You can add as many tags as you feel is necessary, but being general is better. Shortcuts will also enable you to more easily access specific notes. An auto-fill feature for searches (Type Ahead) makes finding notes even faster. An 'Atlas' feature will also let you search them up by location, acting as another form of tagging. To get really specific, Evernote will even let you search for specific file formats within a note including text, images, PDFs and more. If you're looking to organize your notes even further, there is the Notebook, essentially a collection of notes. These notebooks can act as the parent category for a series of notes, allowing you to organize your notes as you would ordinary files or documents.
Sharing and Other Uses for Notes
As a social app, Evernote has plenty of ways to engage with your notes and with others. First of all, since Evernote is compatible with multiple devices, it will regularly sync your notes between those devices. This will let you access all of your notes wherever you are. If you have a particular opinion you would like to share, or a discussion you would like to have, a built-in instant messenger feature will allow you to do that. You can share single notes or entire notebooks with other users for the purposes of illustration, whether in a business meeting or with friends.
If you're someone who is constantly on the go, Evernote can be used as your personal scheduler. Use it to set reminders about events, record receipts for tickets, draft agendas for meetings, compose comprehensive to-do lists and much more. While the process of completing notes takes a while for plain text entry, the voice feature will allow you to enter text much more quickly.
As a free version, Evernote has plenty to offer. However, if you're looking for a more fully featured option, Evernote Premium might be what you want. Access your notebooks offline, wherever you are. Add a 2-Step Verification system when accessing Evernote on a new device. Most importantly, you'll be able to create notes that have four times the file size of ordinary ones and support hi-res images and much larger files.
