Foursquare is a free travel app for Android that provides you with information about all of the interesting locations in your area including restaurants, cultural centres, shopping centres and more, all according to the tastes of your friends and other users. It is available to download in its full version from the review page.

A City Guide in your Hands

If you're a fan of travelling, there's nothing more frustrating than arriving in a city and not knowing where to go. Even in our own cities, we are accustomed to following the same routes and visiting the same kinds of places to the extent that many other locations are overlooked or ignored completely. This is where Foursquare comes in. Whether you're new to a city and are looking for somewhere to eat or you are simply looking for something new to try, Foursquare can help. In essence, it's a city guide for city dwellers, created and developed by city dwellers, with each person acting as a de facto guide through their posts, reviews and recommendations. Being on your Android device makes it all the more convenient.

Discovering and Helping Others Discover

Foursquare is a social app at its core. First, you will set up your profile specifying your area and your tastes. These are treated like meta tags when using the app's search function and are also highlighted in bold as keywords when reading snippets from tips or reviews. The more tastes you have, the better. These could be as specific as 'craft beer' or as general as 'museums'. They can be related to anything from shopping destinations to food. After you enter a search term, a list of options will come up, including their names, distance from you, rating, a thumbnail image and a short description by their visitors. The user interface below the search bar will let you filter your search according to distance and other criteria. Similar to the likes of Google Maps, you'll also be able to save or 'like' a location with the symbols to the right.

You can save the location for a later time, rate it or even share it on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. To determine whether it is worth visiting, you can view its rating, its overall rank for its category/ city and the reviews written by customers or patrons. Engaging with them is highly encouraged too. A 'follow' option will let you follow specific users who provide great tips

When you have tapped on a location, a separate interface will come up. If you have just arrived and want to 'check in', you can do this. You can save the location for a later time, rate it or even share it on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. To determine whether it is worth visiting, you can view its rating, its overall rank for its category/ city and the reviews written by customers or patrons. Engaging with them is highly encouraged too. A 'follow' option will let you follow specific users who provide great tips. You will be notified about them in the future whenever they post a tip. A to-do list can also be used to remind yourself about places to visit. After finding suggestions from others, you'll want to contribute yourself. This is encouraged by writing reviews or leaving tips about places. Be sure to be thorough, honest and concise. You might even build up your own followers after a time. You can then view your 'Expertise' on your profile page. Recently, Foursquare has split its services between the original app and its companion app, Swarm. Although this improves the performance of the original app, check-in processes take longer than they used to. Despite this, the app's interface and design is better than ever and it still has the same database as before.

The Verdict

Foursquare is a highly useful app for anyone living in a populated city. With 25 millions users worldwide, you're bound to find reviews for all kinds of different locations. The interface is very easy to use, with symbols to intuitively access each of the main sections. Search for tips according to your tastes, save locations and visit them in your own time. Provide tips or write reviews of your own to help guide others through the city. Share your experiences on Facebook or Twitter and help spread the word about great places. If you're someone who is fond of travelling and would like to enrich the experience, give Foursquare a try. Whether you're in a new city or want to rediscover your own, it's a great choice and is well worth downloading.
