Maps is a free GPS and navigation app for Android, developed by Google. Explore your world like never before with this easy-to-use application. It is available to download in its full version from the review page.

Your World in your Hand

Google are renowned for their ability to innovate and instigate change in a fast-paced world. While they have a large set of products that speak to this vaulting ambition and drive, one of the best examples is Google Maps. While it was a milestone in itself for it to be released on PCs, for smartphone users it's an absolute life-saver. With Maps, you'll never have to worry about the inconvenience of getting lost again. Find any location quickly and easily with detailed maps of over 220 countries in the world. The world is now in the palm of your hand.

User Interface and Features

Maps has a very easy-to-use interface designed with your convenience in mind. It fully integrates with GPS satellites to give you a real time, clear picture of what's going on around you. What is most important is where you're currently located. Based on this, the user interface of Maps will serve a different purpose. As with other Google apps, the menu can be accessed from the bottom. If you're out and about and are looking for somewhere in particular, the 'Explore Nearby' button will let you examine your immediate area for landmarks or anything you specify (nightclubs, bookshops, restaurants, etc.). This reduces your down time significantly.

Where Maps works best, as most of us know, is when we're trying to travel between two points. To pre-empt any potential mishaps if driving, real time traffic reports will tell us if there's a blockage on the motorway at any point. Any roadworks or other activities that may hinder the progress of pedestrians is also reported to you. The app even includes Timetables for every major transport service in your area. If you decide to walk or cycle, Maps can help with that, too. Once you have input your two destinations, Maps will generate the most optimal route for you, taking into account all real-time changes, roadworks, etc. It can even be used to assess the contours of an area to determine how hard of a trek a walk or cycle might be.

To save you having to look up a place each time you visit it, once you have found it Maps will let you save it to 'Your Places' for quick access in the future. If you would like to help others find the place, you can write a review for it as well as a local guide describing its location in relation to other buildings in the area

To save you having to look up a place each time you visit it, once you have found it Maps will let you save it to 'Your Places' for quick access in the future. If you would like to help others find the place, you can write a review for it as well as a local guide describing its location in relation to other buildings in the area. Because a lot of buildings are landmarks and/ or popular tourist zones, these will have even more information than just a name, thumbnail and address. Using the Street View feature, you'll be able to approach and even enter some of these buildings for a virtual tour.

As a Google app, Maps has some inherent downsides to it. First of all, you will have to possess a Google account and log in to use it. While this is hardly the most inconvenient thing, for those concerned about their privacy it might be troublesome. One other issue is that for the app to work appropriately you must have a stable internet connection, otherwise no real-time information can be gotten from their servers. This makes sense, of course, but it's disappointing that more of Google's maps are not accessible offline.

The Verdict

Google Maps provides outstanding quality maps for over 220 countries worldwide. Explore your city in a brand new way, keep your favorite places in lists and review them for other users. Let Maps guide you to your destination with real-time traffic reports, full GPS coverage, street views with voice guides and much more. Although integration with a Google account is required to use the app to its fullest, with Google you know you're getting a quality product. Whether you're commuting to an unfamiliar place or travelling on holiday, Google Maps will always be there for you as long as you're connected to the internet. Download it now for free and start mapping out your life.
