Your Favorite Media Player on Android

VLC Media Player has become the go-to media player for a lot of internet users, for a variety of reasons. As an open source program, users can freely download the source code for the player and modify it as they please. In the long term this will improve the media player for everyone. What users look for in a multimedia player is one which is compatible, adaptable and easy to use. VLC Media Player is all of these things. Its Android version brings the same quality we are used to on our Windows, Mac or Linux machines. Although it is currently a beta version, it is being updated regularly.

A Power Multimedia Player

VLC Player holds up well alongside its desktop counterpart. Its interface is compact and easy to use, with an orange banner across the top allowing you to navigate and browse your media library and other options. Being able to browse your media library so easily on your smartphone is an overlooked benefit of the app. Without a file manager, this would ordinarily not be possible. When you first install it, it will scan for media on your device and sort it all for you, displaying thumbnails, meta information, file lengths and sizes, etc. You also have the option of categorizing your files as you like by placing them into folders. VLC Player will support the majority of formats and codecs including MPEG-2, DivX, WMV, MP3, MP4, WAV, AVI, MOV, FLV Flash and many more. The player will also let you play network streams so that you can easily watch your favorite shows online. Connecting your smartphone to another device will be recognized by the player, letting you access and play back any compatible files. For a media player on your smartphone, it is highly impressive, with a diverse set of options for when you're on the go.

When playing back media, VLC Player will use its minimalist media player for the task. Video boxes can be cropped and aspect ratios adjusted as required. Through the settings button you can tailor your playing experience to suit you, adding various effects and filters, synchronizing audio and video tracks and fetching any missing codec information about a piece of media online. All media is played back in HD quality, with little or no lag during playback. Using intuitive touch screen gestures, you can control volume and brightness levels.

It is worth noting that, as a beta version, VLC Player for Android is missing a few things. First, as an app, it cannot access the wide range of plugins available to the desktop version. This makes it a bit less versatile. It is also only compatible with ARMv7 or x86 CPUs. Other than these small issues, the app works just like its desktop counterpart and is an absolutely essential utility for anyone who enjoys listening to music on the move.

The Verdict

VLC Player is just as strong as its desktop counterpart with a compact user interface, easily navigable menus, multi-format support and a multi-featured media player. Resize your player, add effects and filters, control volume and brightness and play your media the way you want. Organize and play back your media the way you want to with this outstanding media player for Android. Although still in its beta version, it's far better than any traditional player even at this stage.
