Video Editing Simplified
Are you an aspiring film-maker who does not have the time to meticulously create and edit videos using an industry standard video editor? The creative potential that has been afforded to PC users in recent years has made it possible to simplify even the seemingly most complex of processes by creating compact, accessible interfaces and doing away with a lot of technical terminology - call it a despecialization process. This is what Windows Movie Maker attempts to do by bridging the gap between professional quality videos and the editors that enable their creation. The latest version of Windows Movie Maker tries more so than ever to preserve this idea of simple but effective editing.
Professional Quality Editing
The program's user interface is comprised of three main areas: the browse area, used for browsing for photos and videos and will act as your timeline when making videos; the editor, used for viewing and editing segments of your video; and finally, the menus, tools and social buttons at the top of the screen. To get started with a project, all you have to do is import some media, whether a video you filmed, a photo you took, etc. From here you can drag your media into the right-hand box and start editing.
Photos are displayed on top, videos on the bottom, all on a horizontal timeline. Photos, videos, text and voice are all separated, and can be freely lengthened, shortened, or slid along the timeline with absolute freedom. Clicking on a segment will allow you to split, set an end point or edit it on its own. The tabbed menu at the top of the screen minimizes the effort involved in performing simple operations on your media. The 'Home' tab will be where you do most of your editing, letting you add media, record a webcam video, record a narration (voiceover), take snapshots, add titles, captions or credits and format all of them. Clicking on any of these will transform the top menu into a separate, dedicated menu making the editing process even easier.

Creating an professional quality movie is easy thanks to these features. Narrations let you enrich your content with a back story. Add titles, captions and credits to this and you have the basic skeleton. From here, you can add animations (transitions, pan and zoom) and visual effects (filters, lighting, shadowing, etc.). This latest version has an even bigger choice for the use, with an assortment of different textures, colors and shapes to transform your film. In the end, your film's quality is limited only by your creative potential. From the Project tab, you can 'emphasize' one segment (voice, audio, video) and make it louder than the rest and set your aspect ratio.
Export and Share
When you have finished editing your video, you can view it in full screen with the 'View' tab. You can also make some last minute adjustments with the 'Edit' tab, letting you customize video volume, fade-in/ out speed, video speed and duration, splitting and trimming, and video stabilization. As with previous versions, you can preview your project or a segment of it at any stage using the timeline slider and the spacebar key (or play button). This perfectly replicates what your project will look like once exported.
From here, you can either save your project and come back to it at a later point, or publish it as a movie. Saving it will bring up a comprehensive list of recommended settings for publication or use on phones and various websites: windows phones, tablets, android phones, MySpace, Vimeo, Flickr, DailyMotion, etc. This ensures there will be no format clashes. Publishing comes with a host of new features. First, there are far more formats than ever before when publishing it. More importantly, though, is the astounding range of social media options available to you when publishing: Facebook, OneDrive, YouTube, Vimeo, Flickr, Groups. This makes sharing your creations easier than ever.
Windows Movie Maker 2015 succeeds at reinventing itself through a great set of new features. Its user interface is compact and more intuitive, with dedicated tabs and menus for each step of the editing process. The timeline is familiar, but still splits up all of your media into separate lines to be cut or slid around as necessary. The webcam video option is nice, allowing you to quickly add footage from your webcam and speed up the creation process. The most notable new feature of the program, however, is its social media integration, allowing you to publish your movie in multiple formats and on popular social media platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo and Flickr. Overall, if you're looking for a video editor which is easy to use and pick up, even for beginners, Windows Movie Maker 2015 is definitely the one to choose. Its clever layout ensures that even the most obscure of options are never more than a click a way - exactly as a video editor ought to be.
