WinEdt is an all-purpose text editor available for Windows that is mainly used with front-end compilers and typesetting systems such as TeX and MikTeX.

An Impressive Interface

The program has a predefined (though customizable) interface with graphic controls. A mouse and keyboard interface are also available. On the left is a Navigation Tree which displays the file that is currently open Main File. The right window is your text editor interface. When setting up the interface, the Main File can be set up manually. Once this is done your Tree is built according to various input directives and you can start editing.

WinEdt is not a TeX system, it just supports them. This should be pointed out at the outset. Once download, you can get started quickly. For those who aren't famiiliar with text editors, they are a particularly useful way to manage larger projects involving chapters, multiple fonts (mathematical notation, for example) and multiple databases without constantly referencing or importing what you need (known as active strings). With WinEdt, you can set up keyboard shortcuts to access virtually anything in your editor.

While writing a thesis (an example used on their site), calling on particular mathematical formulas one minute, and a particular bibliographical reference the next minute, is entirely doable.

Multi-Purpose

WinEdt's Modes each have their own settings, letting you customize your text editor for each. Programming languages, rich text, and mathematical notation each have different settings attached to them. Setting each up correctly ensures that you can edit and write text in the most efficient means possible. The interface also allows you to progress with your work while monitoring and structuring its contents at the same time. Active strings can be used for a variety of functions, but effectively let you call on or remove any text from the editor. Ending a HTML session can be done with "<<", for example. If there are other Macros you aren't sure about or that you wish to add, it can be done in the Options menu. Console applications such as TeX and BibTeX are executed in WinEdt's own console. From here you can also edit any applications so that their macros are properly set up.

If you are looking for a smart, reliable, and compact text editor then WinEdt will certainly fit the bill. Its UI contains just two windows for your Tree and your Text Editor. Its settings are comprehensive, allowing you to edit console applications, modes, fonts, notations, and any other element you can think of. Whether you're producing a report, writing a thesis, or composing any kind of larger project requiring multiple formats, WinEdt will let you manage it all using a single interface window. A great download.
