The King Games Saga
When mobile gaming took off as a legitimate enterprise, King were at the forefront, forging the design principles and practices which would become legendary and creating a new kind of gamer in the process. The free to play model allowed the company to be as creative as it wanted, offering new content and mechanics to players regularly. This was never more true than with their single most successful game, Candy Crush Saga. Embracing the simple mechanics King are known for, it took off as a worldwide phenomenon (much like Angry Birds) and encouraged players to revel in arcade-style simplicity once again.
Candy Crush Saga immediately draws players in with its sweet, delicious interface filled with vibrant color, sharp graphics, fluid animations and cute characters (Tiffi and Toffee). There is no story to speak of, other than an exploration of Candyland, but since the game progresses in a linear fashion, it's not that noticeable. In the game, the player must progress through a series of several hundred levels, each taking place on a grid of candies. Levels are in groups of fifteen, known as 'episodes'. To date, over 1000 levels have been released for the game. For those who are unfamiliar with match-3 games, the mechanics are very simple. In this case, the player has to swap adjacent candies to make matches of three or more in a row (no diagonal matches). Matches will contribute to your high score and your in-level objectives. When you complete a level, you will earn a rating (one, two or three stars) which is based on your performance.
The game makes levels more interesting by including five level types: complete a level within a certain number of moves, remove all jelly-filled spaces, ingredient drop levels, timed levels and collecting candies in a specific order. Every episode, a new set of game mechanics will be introduced to the player, though I never felt as if these were too difficult to handle. In addition to the 1100 or so levels on offer, there are also 'dreamworld' levels, which are much more difficult versions of the original levels. These provide a true test for Candy Crush players, placing often insurmountable time and move restrictions on players as well as inserting various 'Blockers' or pieces designed to challenge the player.

One very important feature of Candy Crush, and indeed most games of this type, is the social aspect of gameplay. When you achieve high scores, you are given the option to share them with your friends on Facebook, Twitter and other social networks. You can also send and receive lives as gifts from your friends which further encourages players to work together. Although there is no multiplayer options available, there is definitely collaboration.
Difficulty Curve and Boosters
As you progress through levels, you will notice yourself losing more and more lives. Failure of a level occurs when you have run out of time, run out of moves, trigger various in-level events (bomb blockers, for example) or you otherwise fail an objective. Your lives will regenerate regularly (every half hour), or you can purchase them online through various in-app purchases. This option has always been an issue for me, however it is still possible to complete the game without them.
Similar to lives, if you are having particular difficulty in a level you can also purchase various kinds of booster which including bomb coolers, color bombs, extra moves, extra time, jelly fish and many more, each of which is designed to give the player an edge during a level. Unfortunately, these will only last for one level and will often be expensive to purchase. After several hundred levels, purchasing these almost feels like a necessity, which is part of what makes this game so entertaining for players.
Candy Crush Saga is one of the most popular apps of all time, and now you can enjoy it on your PC screen. The hundreds of levels on offer will keep you very busy, particularly if you are aiming for a three-star score in each one. Play through both 'reality' and 'dreamworld' levels for the biggest challenge. Use boosters if you're having difficulty and conquer blockers which seek to make things difficult for you. The game is the perfect balance of skill and strategy and no level ever feels insurmountable. The presence of in-app purchases is a definite negative for the game, and at times these felt necessary to be able to progress at anything more than a snail's pace. Nevertheless, the wonderful graphics, characters, level design and gameplay more than make up for it and the game can justifiably be called one of the greatest puzzle games of our generation. If you have yet to experience the joy of Candy Crush Saga, then now is your chance. Download it now and see it for yourself.
