This game, which was one of the first side-scrollers for the PC, tells the story of Billy Blaze, a genius kid who is only eight years old. The small hero manages to build a spaceship using tomato sauce cans in his home’s backyard, and at the first chance, he goes out towards the stars to start his space exploration trip. Using his brother’s football helmet, from now on he is known as Commander Keen, Defender of the Earth.
Defend the planet from the Vorticons
While Keen is busy exploring the Martian landscape, a race of aliens from planet Vorticon VI plan to get rid of him to destroy Earth. The first thing they do is steal parts of his spaceship and hide it all over the planet, to stop Keen from returning home. Your mission in Commander Keen will be to find all of the ship’s lost pieces, while defending yourself against the different aliens bent on your destruction.
As you advance in the game, you’ll find a number of different enemies, some more dangerous than others, that you’ll have to defeat. For example, the Yorps are small friendly creatures, and while they can’t harm you, they can be a nuisance since they push Keen towards other places. The Vorticons, on the other hand, are very dangerous, since they will follow you and jump on you quickly. You’ll also find robots, both dangerous and harmless, but you can’t kill them, only avoid them.
Gameplay is very simple. It´s a side-scrolling platform game in which you’ll be able to move, jump and shoot your laser gun. You’ll jump over some enemies to immobilize them and shoot to kill them, but remember that it can take several shots to get rid of some of the monsters.
