Mastery of Shapes and Space
Sliding puzzles have always involved a degree of foresight on the part of the player. To successfully and consistently complete them, you have to engage in significant amount of trial and error, sliding pieces this way and that until a favorable combination is arrived upon. This process is what makes these games so appealing, since although the puzzle may be presented rather simply, the limits placed upon the player, whether time constraints, move limits and so on, force you to be as efficient as possible. PyraCubes is such a game, emphasizing minimalism and precise thinking.
Core Gameplay and Features
The story of the game seems to be based on Egyptian history, specifically on the rivalry between Mobib and Theban. Mobib, in his lust for power, discovers the pyracubes, a source of ancient and powerful energy, and uses them to turn Theban, the current king, into a lowly scarab. Determined to do all he can to rectify matters, Theban sets off to find these pyracubes and harness their power for himself.
The game is divided into approximately 50 puzzles, each of increasing difficulty. The main objective is to move the pyracubes in a room around until all like-colored ones are touching. This can be executed with simple touch and slide controls to move the cubes. It's not that simple, though, since when cubes of the same color touch, they adhere to one another, making the larger mass more difficult to move. This encourages the player to think a lot more about each move and its consequences. Not only that, but they don't quite 'slot' in as they would in Tetris. A cube will adhere to another at its halfway point, making things very difficult to manage.
As you progress, you will also encounter four talismans which can assist you in levels. These will transform cube colors and types, remove cubes, and destroy scenery. Using these also becomes a highly skilful exercise, since making the wrong choice about when or where to use a talisman could make completion of a level impossible.
Completing a level is generally done by connecting all like-colored pyracubes together. There are also additional rewards for completing levels more quickly in the form of goal stars. Should you complete a level within the 'Goal' number of moves displayed at the bottom of your screen, you will earn a number of goal stars. While each level has several solutions, only one will earn you all five goal stars. This makes gameplay far more engaging, since the player has to carefully consider each and every move that they make.
If you are unsure about any aspect of the game or how to get started, there are 10 tutorial levels available which will introduce you not only to the basic mechanics of the game, but also how to get into the right mindset when playing. Playing the game well takes a lot of practice but it is highly rewarding. The completionists will definitely have something to strive for when trying to complete puzzles in the minimum number of moves.

Graphics in the game are impressive for an Android title, with some great visual effects for the pyraspheres and your scarab. Level design is generally quite simplistic, with some Egyptian-style backgrounds and sound effects. The music is also a nice addition, adding an ancient air to gameplay. Because of its simple design, there is very little to find fault with.
PyraCubes is a highly original sliding puzzle game with some unique and interesting mechanics. While deceptively simple at its core, ensuring that all like-colored cubes stick together becomes a meticulous exercise and one which requires a great deal of practice to master. The 10 tutorial levels will help you get started if you're having trouble, though the game's controls and user interface are quite well designed so for most it's better to hop right in. The talismans add another layer to gameplay, allowing you to manipulate your environment to shorten the number of moves to obtain those elusive goal stars for efficient play. For many, that will be the biggest incentive of all, since achieving the maximum number has only a single solution. All in all, PyraCubes is a great game for anyone looking to challenge their brains and their capacity for spatial reasoning. Well worth downloading
